Right from the beginning of creation, God had a plan of peace and abundance for men and women. He created us in his image, and placed us in a garden brimming with life yet wild and in need of care and stewardship. The plan was that, as equal partners and working in unity with our Creator, man and woman would take care of the earth in joyful, purposeful harmony, forever.
But the plan went astray.
The woman encountered Satan masquerading as a snake. Satan, the once beautiful angel who became corrupted with pride and now hates God and anything that resembles Him, deceived her with lies and tempted her to do what God had said not to do. She believed the lies, and through a single but significant act of disobedience the woman and the man shattered the peaceful bonds of unity that once existed between them. The result was sin and the curse of death and decay that came with it.
That broken sense of unity goes down to a spiritual level. It immediately disconnected man from woman, and humankind from God. This divide still exists today, and no external law can put it right.
Humans are spiritual beings, and there is an underlying spiritual force working to keep gender attitudes divisive and competitive.
Consider how this division has persisted among men and women. Women have often been treated like chattel by men, or have been undervalued or underestimated. As a result, many struggle with self-image extremes, either thinking too lowly or too highly of themselves, while others suffer from a victim mentality. Men have had their thinking towards women shaped by age old patriarchal attitudes, or by having poor role models early in life and even through abuse.
In truth, men and women both struggle to know their identity and find peace with each other. To this very day, despite all our social and political efforts, there still exists matters of the heart that struggle to be addressed or even acknowledged - every relationship will face underlying selfishness, entitlement, bitterness, and inequality. If we know that this issue is at the least deeply emotional and psychological, it is really so difficult to imagine that the battle of the sexes is a spiritual war?
Humans are spiritual beings, and there is an underlying spiritual force working to keep gender attitudes divisive and competitive. Satan, the enemy of God, has a vested interest in keeping men and women battling with each other because he knows the power that can be unleashed on the earth if men and women were reconciled and working in complete unity once again. So spirits of control, competition, and misogyny continue to divide and hold us hostage. Men are still holding Eve responsible for the curse of the fall and she, and in turn womankind, was forced to give up her God-given call to rule equally over creation. This was the curse and the consequence of our mutual disobedience.
I believe God’s dream is for us to return to the state in the garden, relating to our Father first and then to each other.
But God has provided the answer. Men and women both needed rescuing from this curse. Now we have a choice to take God seriously and believe that His son broke into history to redeem us from the curse and overcome evil, and return us to His original plan.
I believe God’s dream is for us to return to the state in the garden, relating to our Father first and then to each other. His desire is to see women liberated, and to restore the right perspective for both men and women. In God’s plan women were given equal status with men. The present disconnect between men and women is a spiritual problem. Only God has the solution.
